"Kosher" on a gift basket can mean very different things. For a family that keeps kosher, the difference matters: a basket they cannot open is a gift that goes in the bin.
What "kosher certified" should mean
A kosher certified food carries a hechsher, the symbol of a kosher certification agency, on its packaging. For a gift basket, check two things:
- The certification is named before you pay. A good shop shows it on the product page, not only in a footnote or after delivery.
- It covers what is actually in the basket. A basket where only some items are certified, or with unwrapped extras added, may not be usable in a kosher home.

Pareve, dairy or meat
Kosher food is also classed as pareve (neither meat nor dairy), dairy, or meat. Pareve is the safest choice for a gift: it can be set out with any meal. For a shiva house, where visitors bring and share food all week, pareve avoids any question. Some sweets are dairy, so check the label.
For a shiva, also check
- Nothing needs cooking or refrigerating. The family is not cooking, and the fridge is usually full.
- The arrival date is shown before you pay, for the family's ZIP. The first days of shiva are the busiest.
- You can add a card, ideally in Hebrew as well as English, such as *HaMakom yenachem*.
Who offers kosher certified gift baskets
Broadly, three kinds of company:
- Kosher-only gift shops, where every product is kosher and the certification is listed on each one. This is the simplest choice when you are not sure what the family keeps.
- General gift companies with a kosher range. Fine if you check each item's certification yourself; the rest of their catalogue usually is not kosher.
- Local kosher caterers and fruit shops in Jewish neighbourhoods, which can often deliver the same day nearby but rarely ship further.
Where Herbert & Phyllis fits
We are a kosher-only gift shop. Our dried fruit and nut baskets are kosher certified, as each product page shows, and pareve. They need no refrigeration, ship free anywhere in the U.S. (orders placed by 10am ET on a business day ship the same day), and show the arrival date for the family's ZIP before you pay. At checkout you can pick a card message in English, Hebrew or both.
